Medieval Cagliari and ceramic lessons

Cagliari, the capital of the province and the autonomous region of Sardinia, is the largest city of the island. The City ', from the architectural point of view, changes appearance depending on the historical period when it was inhabited.

Its ancient name "Karalis", probably originally meant "the fortress" (Caraili: in Proto-Sardinian ment "boulder, rock, cliff"), with reference to the rocky hill on which was built its present district of Castello.

The territory on which now stands the town, was already inhabited by the late fourth millennium a.c., and in the nuragic period.

In the eighth century a.c., became a Phoenician colony, than Punic, Roman, Vandal and Byzantine, with repeated raids by Arabs who unsuccessfully tried to conquer Sardinia.

In the Middle Ages, it was followed by a period Sardinian self-government and Cagliari was the administrative center of one of the four independent states in which the Island was divided, colled Giudicati.

Than Cagliari was subject to the dominion of Pisa until, in 1297, Pope Boniface VIII, enfeufed Sardinia and Corsica in favor of James II of Aragon. In 1479, when Ferdinand the Catholic succeeded to John II of Aragon, the island went to Spain and to the throne of Castile and Aragon.

In 1717, to counter the Spanish supremacy and create a new balance in the Mediterranean, British, French and Austrians granted to the Piedmontese and to the Duke of Savoy Amadeus II, the title of King of Sardinia. And it remained till the unification of Italy.
