Castelsardo

Located in the north of Sardinia, it is a stylish and gracious city that has absorbed the medieval charm, presenting itself as a fortress on a high cliff of trachyte, and with great views of the wide bay.

The coastline of Castelsardo is characterized by the typical trachytic rock of the area and therefore offers many cliffs overlooking the sea. Nevertheless, there are also sandy coves like Cala Ostina, east of the city, and Punta Tramontana to the west, along the beaches of Marinedda and Navy and the hamlet of Lu Bagnu beach.

The city has long been a defensive fortress and a strategic control point. The old town still retains the typical structure of the medieval fortress with imposing towers, steep stairs and narrow streets.

Castelsardo has had a very interesting story, I am witness to the ancient city walls with towers and numerous other ancient fortifications built to protect the coast and its inhabitants from enemy attacks.

The old town is very nice and friendly, typical medieval, embedded in the stone streets, built on steep slopes and characterized by colorful old houses.

Near the castle is the Cathedral of San Antonio, dating back to the fourteenth century, whose domes are covered with colorful tiles.

At the foot of the castle is the church of Santa Maria delle Grazie, where is possible to admire the wooden crucifix of the Black Christ, dating from the fourteenth century.

Even nature has left hits work of art, since you can observe a big elephant-shaped sculpture carved on dark trachyte by millenniums of wind and rain.

In the city live creative and talented artisans who transform raw materials, such as coral, filigree, cork, ceramic into real masterpieces. Flagship of the city is the Mediterranean Interlacing Museum housed in the castle.

The museum dedicated to the rich Sardinian tradition of using plant resources of the territory, such as the dwarf palm, rushes, asphodel, and other plants, to make everyday objects according to old manual weaving techniques. The collection includes so many artifacts, divided by type of use: from the creels fishing baskets, the typical lake boats "Su fassoni", sieves and other tools to make bread. There you will also find information on the raw materials used and the various processing techniques.

Castelsardo also boasts a quality cuisine, where you can taste the recipes of typical Sardinian cuisine, and, next to them is present with many local dishes based on fish and shellfish. Among the most popular we must remember the fish soup, paticularly rich and tasty, Marinara Mullets, sea bass with Vernaccia wine, roast squid, crowfish and, above all, the Castellana lobster, considered one of the most delicious of the Mediterranean.
