Sanluri - The medieval castle with ghosts and Sardinian wine tasting

The Castle of Sanluri is a striking military fortress built by the judges of Arborea, during the reign of Peter IV of Aragon. Built in 1355, in just twenty-seven days and twenty-seven nights, the castle is the only survivor of the eighty-eight built in Sardinia between the Judicial  and the medieval period.

The Castle is used as Museum of the "Risorgimento",  in memory of the Sardinians fallen in the war for unification of Italy, and, in it, are preserved precious memorabilia from the First World War and the earlier wars of Independence.

On the ground floor, among other things, are on display muskets of the eighteenth century, Garibaldi memorabilia, and the Italian Tricolore flag that, in 1918, was hoisted in Trieste when the  town was returned to Italy. On the first floor of the castle are exposed many memorabilia of the colonial wars of Eritrea, Libya and Ethiopia, as well as items of the fascist era and of the last world war, as well as a wide collection of mementos, books, newspapers and documents.

There is also a collection of wax models of three-dimensional miniature monuments, cameos, medallions, "tondos" of the "Via Crucis" and scenes from everyday life, some very rare, executed, between the sixteenth and nineteenth centuries, by Italian and foreign artists to demonstrate the different clients their proposals to be later realized in larger scale.

Some rooms in the Castle are furnished with the original furniture. In one of those rooms is exhibited correspondance of General Nino Villa Santa with Gabriele d'Annunzio, in the Napoleonic drowing room one can admire swords, documents and furniture belonging to the Imperial family, and in the room of the House of Doria is displayed a beautiful eighteenth-century bed.

The tour ends with a stroll on the terrace of the Castle which offers an impressive view that sweeps up to the Castle of San Michele di Cagliari, forty kilometers away, and in the park where displayed ald pieces of artillery, torpedoes and bombs.

In a castle one cannot miss ghosts. And also our castle boasts hostin some of them, harmless, but that sometimes worn of their presence their descendants, who have ssen them drinking hot teas, or listening them playing their piano ecc. And, maybe, precisely for this reason that the Castle of Sanluri has recently welcomed the exploratory technical team of the TV show "Discover", which explored and uncovered hidden places, carved into the rock, formerly used as secret passages, and places of sinister events. And maybe it 's because of the presence of the ghosts that in 2015 the Castle has hosted a conference on the paranormal.

The picturesque hilly land surrounding the castle, not only stimulates the imagination, but it is one of the most fertile soils and ideal for growing grapes. In these vineyards it is born a great wine, rich in history and tradition, created to win the hearts and tastes of true connoisseurs. And you will be given the opportunity to taste the local wines, paired with some del;icious appetizers of local products.
