The unique nature of southern Sardinia

The south of Sardinia is one of the most popular tourist destinations: white beaches with spectacular scenery, granite rocks, mysterious caves, mountains covered with juniper bushes, cork oaks, eucalyptus forests, cactus growing along the roads. On the way you will also see pomegranate trees, citrus groves, vineyards and olive groves - the nature of Sardinia will never leave you indifferent!

The same can be said abouth route that will take you to the caves of "Is Zuddas", The caves of Is Zuddas, came to light accidentally around the years '60. Located in the south-western part of Sardinia, they form a splendid underground backdrop created by the incessant action of water. The relief of Monte Meana, in which  the cavity develops, consists of dolomitic rocks dating to about 530 million years. The cave consists of several rooms, each of which is distinguished by the peculiarity of its concretions. The cave has a constant temperature of 16 degrees and humidity close to 100%.

Inside reigns a great atmosphere that will captivate you from the first instance.

Along the tourist route that runs for about 500 m you can admire beautiful and sometimes massive concretions that give life to the giant columns: stalactites and stalagmites, flows and sheaths up to the rare aragonite. The latter represent the main attraction of the caves. The aragonite, a particular element that assumes the typical form of small flakes of snow , is present here in two distinct forms: the acicular aragonite, the "cave flowers", large clumps of needle-like crystals; and the spectacular eccentric aragonite: filiform formations (angel hair) that develop in any direction taking bizarre shapes, whose concentration in one room makes these the unique caves in the world.

Every year, in the grand Organ Hall, for the Holy Christmas is prepared a big Crib crib.

In the initial part of the caves one can see the skeletal remains of a Prolagus Sardus, a lagomorfe (hare of the caves), that lived only in Sardinia and Corsica and became extinct about 400 years ago.

On request it is possible to make a few stops at the seaside.

The duration of the tour is one day (8 hours).
